Trivia: Lt. Columbo's first name was never spoken aloud in the series and when pressed, he would insist that it was "Lieutenant". The "fact" that the Lieutenant's full name was 'Philip Columbo' was actually invented by Fred L. Worth for his 1974 book The Trivia Encyclopedia. This misinformation lives on in popular culture and several sources still cite the name Philip Columbo as the Columbo character's full name. In fact, close-ups of Columbo's police badge in the 1971 episode Dead Weight clearly reveal that his first name is in fact 'Frank’!
